£500 government payments for low-income workers
The government announced a legal requirement for self-isolation and significant financial penalties for those who do not comply with the new rules, including employers threatening their staff with dismissal.
Boris Johnson announced that low-income individuals who lose their income due to self-isolation will receive £500 in government support.
Nicola Sturgeon confirmed that this also applies to Scotland.
In England alone, approximately 4 million people are eligible for this amount. The government expects the new rules to come into effect from October 12th, while those who begin self-isolation on September 28th will receive retrospective payments.
What are the 4 essential conditions to receive the £500 grant?
- Receiving benefits: Universal Credit, Working Tax Credit, income-based Employment and Support Allowance, Jobseeker's Allowance, Income Support, Housing Benefit, or Pension Credit;
- Being employed or self-employed;
- Inability to work from home and a resulting loss of income;
- A self-isolation order from NHS Test and Trace Support.
What documents are required?
- notification from NHS Test and Trace and a unique ID number;
- bank statement;
- proof of employment;
- confirmation from your employer that you cannot work from home;
- For the self-employed, an annual self-assessment will suffice.
Fines for individuals violating restrictions start from £1,000, e.g., for breaking quarantine after international travel. However, they can increase to £10,000 for repeated violations or preventing others from self-isolating.
